Microblading, what exactly is it?
Microblading is a tattooing technique in which a small handheld tool, sort of like an X-ACTO knife, is used to add semi-permanent pigment to the skin. It’s basically a tattoo, except it only lasts about 1-3 years depending on your skin.
I first learned of this technique in 2016 when I was in Florida for a Perfectly Posh Leadership event. I stayed at my sisters and my oldest niece was home from University of Alabama. She is a makeup and pretty much all things beauty guru! She started talking about saving her money to have this done the next time she was home from school. It was going to cost her between $500-600. Immediately I was like, “nope”. Can’t afford that. Can’t justify that. Never gonna happen for me. But, I’ll surely check it out when I get home!
I came home and started looking for someone in the Chicagoland area who does it because I had literally never heard of it. I asked my friends in the beauty industry if they could point me in the right direction. I’m the polar opposite of my niece, not into beauty and makeup and being on trend..I’m super basic in that aspect. Surprisingly, I found a very small amount of people who were qualified. I couldn’t pull the trigger though. $600+ here in the Chicago area and I couldn’t justify it. I wasn’t working and no way was I going to tell my husband I spent that kind of money on freakin eyebrows!
Instead I found an amazing brow girl downtown, Maggie of Maggie Eyebrows and I was seeing her regularly for wax and tint. I did that for about a year. The drive got old and because I started working, I could no longer go during the day. Evenings are always tough to schedule appointments because of my kids. So I stopped going. I’m not that far from Chicago, but add in traffic and weather and Chicago is an hour from Chicago..one way.
A good friend, Nancy at Hello Gorgeous is an esthetician and works from home, she started doing them for me. She was originally doing eyelash extensions on me, don’t ask me why I never had her do my brows before! I don’t know, I have no logical answer to that! LOL!
Every time she would work on me, I would say, “I just need to get Microblading already”. I was getting tinted and waxed frequently and every time I would WISH that my eyebrows would stay exactly like that, perfect! She is incredible and would encourage me, she would say “You should just do it. You will love it!”
Jump Right In
I had done enough looking and research and finally decided to ask around again for recommendations. But before I could, a post in a local group came across my Facebook feed, someone looking for suggestions for Microblading. I read the comments and multiple people were suggesting the same girl, Kelsey at Vanity Ink Studios in Frankfort, Illinois. So I ask Hello Gorgeous because she is my go-to beauty adviser and she says, “oh yea, go to Kelsey, she’s great!” The best part? Her cost is only $450! I know, it’s a lot, but less than the original prices I was finding three years prior.
A hockey mom friend was posting about it too, I told her we should go together. So we did! We booked consultations for a Wednesday afternoon. I met with Kelsey, asked a couple of questions and I said, “When is your next available?” She said, “Right now”. I laughed and said, “ok, let’s do this!”
Today has been 2 weeks since I had Microblading done and I am smitten! I literally can not stop staring at my brows. I had zero issues with healing. The day after it felt like I had sunburn but that’s it. I used nothing on them during the healing process and there was zero itching. It did look like I had caterpillars on my face for a couple of days while they were scabbed over, but that’s about it. I can’t even begin to explain to you how happy I am that I found her. Also happy for waiting! The newness has worn off and it’s no where near as expensive as it was three years ago. Kelsey is an esthetician AND a tattoo artist, is crazy talented, and most importantly trained and certified! Here is a photo I posted to my Instagram yesterday showing off my amazing brows!
I go back in three weeks for my first fill which is included in the cost. As stated above, it will last 1-3 years depending on skin type. I have recently been trying to stay on top of my skincare routine so I hope I can get a full 2-3 years out of mine. I am going to ask her about “fills” or regular touch-ups after the first year when I see her again. When I do, I will update this post!
Take My Advice But Do Your Own Research
So what I’m telling you is, if you are in or near to the Chicago Southwest Suburbs, you REALLY need to make an appointment to see Kelsey at Vanity Ink Studios, for real. Not only did I do it that day, my girlfriend that went with for her consultation did it right after me! She is happy and loves hers as well. If you are not local, please make sure you do your research before you let anyone touch your face with an Xacto knife! For real! Days after I had it done news articles started popping up (Thanks AI) of botched jobs. Don’t be a statistic! Microblading is an art and I highly suggest you check out your techs licensing.
I happen to be scrolling Instagram the other day and see my fat eyes! Kelsey posted my before and after photos on her page, and here they are for all to see…..me and my fat eyes are super proud! I do consider this a form of self-care even though it’s a beauty/image thing. This makes ME feel good and that’s all that matters! Check out an older post of mine regarding Self-Care and why it’s important.
P.S. Not gonna lie, that shit was painful til she numbed me up! I have a high pain tolerance, except when someone is drawing eyebrows on me with an X-ACTO knife!
