What is a Personal Brand?
Personal brand, huh? Your personal brand is what is going to set you apart from the crowd and foster a long-term relationship with your customers.
In 2016 I was searching Facebook groups, trying to come up with new ways to market my direct sales business. I felt like my market was running cold and I needed to start branching out. After reading a couple of posts in different groups, I landed myself in The Socialite Suite on Facebook. At the time there were a couple thousand people in there. I spent a lot of my time there reading and learning how to grow my business organically. There are currently over 100K people in there and I still find myself occasionally scrolling to get new ideas.
The first Sassy Suite training I started with was the Winning with Pinterest Video Course simply because I wanted to learn it better. I figured everyone like me was just pinning kids crafts, home remodel projects and recipes they were never going to use. This course was MIND BLOWING! I learned the whole point of Pinterest and how to make it work to my advantage as a direct seller. I was hooked, I needed more! The next course I did was Brand Yo’Self with Suite Graphics video course. This course was special because it taught me how to start working with graphics and how to start branding myself.
Creating graphics scared me, not gonna lie! Everyone I knew at the time that was doing their own was using Photoshop, I couldn’t afford that. Paying for the graphics video course was worth it’s weight in gold to me. You learn how to utilize the free graphics sites and all the basics. I’m not a creative person. It was super easy for me to just snag someone else’s photo or use our company approved logos. That is also what the majority of what other consultants were doing. I knew well enough that I needed to stand out from everyone else if I was going to be noticed.
Is there an object or word that people see and associate with you? That’s not a question I had ever been asked until I started my personal branding journey. That question really changed my entire idea of what I wanted my brand to look like. I went to Facebook and I asked my people. “What word or object comes to mind when you think of me?” There was quite a bit of response. Everyone knows I love coffee and I cuss, a lot. But it’s not WHO I am, I’m so much more than that.
I dug deep as I worked. By this time I was elbow deep into Blogging Boot camp, also run by The Sassy Suite. We had to pick colors and fonts and logos and create a design in Session 2! All those things scared me. I didn’t know what I wanted. What if I hated it the next day? I have to pick a font? Oh man, I’m too indecisive, how can I pick just 1 or 2? But I kept at it. My blog AND my branding completely changed, twice, from what it originally started as.
The more work I did and the more I searched, I realized my branding is all about ME. I eventually identified with the lotus flower and this is how my branding was born. “And Still I Rise” is a quote I came across while I was working on my blog design. It’s a quote that has stuck in my head ever since I read it the first time. Through all the mud and the muck of my life, I still rise. THAT is who I am and THAT is what I heard when I read my friends words they used to describe me with. “And Still I Rise” will also be my next tattoo =)
Why Creating A Personal Brand Is Important
It’s important because while you may be a consultant for XYZ company, you are NOT XYZ company. When people see a Target logo, they don’t think of Sarah the guest services girl. So when someone sees the same post shared by 15 of her friends, who is she going to consider shopping with? Someone who just blasted her feed with a company log or you who created your own photo with your own words and your own personality? Your personal brand is your personal style, it’s who YOU are, not your company. Borrowing other people’s advertising graphics should be a thing of the past once you create your style. You will stand out from the rest and it will be noticed.
If you are an Independent Business Owner or Direct Seller, I can’t stress enough how important it is to create your own branding. Here are a couple of courses that would benefit you greatly in starting your personal branding journey.
